asıl mesleği doktorluk olan jean paul marat, fransız devrimi öncesi mesleğini bırakarak devrimin en radikal görüşlü gazetecilerinden biri olmuştur. l'ami du peuple (halkın dostu) adlı bir gazete çıkardı. insan hakları söylemleriyle halkın desteğini kazanan marat, ülkeden kaçan kral ve kraliçenin yargılanmasını istedi. devrim döneminin önemli partilerinden biri olan jirondenler, monarşiye karşı çıkmalarına rağmen ülkenin cumhuriyet ile yönetilmesini istemiyordu. yakalandığı cilt hastalığı yüzünden evinden çıkmayan marat jirondenler sempatizanı olan bir kadın tarafından bıçaklanarak öldürülmüştür.
